The Stiftung Industriedenkmapflege und Geschichtskultur (Foundation for the Preservation of Industrial Monuments and Historical Culture) is responsible for the care of 13 industrial monuments in North Rhine Westphalia. At the moment it owns fourteen former sites related to the coal- and steelindustry. The Foundation was set up in 1995 by the Federal State of North Rhine Westphalia and the Ruhrkohle AG (now the RAG business concern) in order to pioneer new ways of preserving prominent testimonies of the industrial age. The aim of the foundation is to protect and maintain the monuments, to use them in a sensible manner, to engage in academic research and make the monuments accessible to the general public.
