Béatrice Balcou

BEATRICE BALCOU
is a visual artist who lives and works between Lille (France) and Brussels (Belgium). In 2000 she started to center her work around the body. If this work combines video and photography, the essence of it is more located in a creative process related on the performance and the participation of non professionnals. In 2005 she starts a residency with the theater “Le Vivat” at Armentières (France). That year will enable her to continue her research in the field of living arts. In 2007, she has been accepted for the research program “ex.e.r.ce”, situated in the National Choreographic Center of Montpellier, directed by Mathilde Monnier and Xavier Le Roy. During this high level program she works with among others Jérome Bel, Jan Kopp, Jonathan Burrows, Jan Ritsema, Loïc Touzé and Mark Tompkins.

Today Béatrice Balcou’s work explores various strategies for approaching choreography through anthropology and creates pieces from visual arts or dance. From 2007 on, she works on a practical and theoritical thesis at the University of Rennes (France) untitled "The question of reality in contemporary dance". In 2008 she will teach a masterclass on the relation between dance and visual arts at the Lille University of Dance.

Her work has been shown in France at the theater Le Vivat in Armentières, at the Malterie  in Lille, at the museum of contemporary art in Issoudun, at the EROA of Gondecourt, at the gallery Tal Coat in Hennebont, at the gallery Le Lieu in Lorient, at the “Piscine” Museum of Art and Industry  in Roubaix ant at “l’atelier d’Estienne” in Pont-Scorff during the festival “Art chemin faisant”. In Belgium it was shown at the cultural center De Markten in Brussels, at the gallery S&H De Buck in Gent, at the Beneden gallery in the cultural centrum in Kortrijk. In Romania it has been shown in the National Center of dance in Bucharest.

Béatrice Balcou has had residencies at Nadine and at Bains Connective in Brussels, and at the museum of contemporary art of Issoudun and the Vivat in Armentières in France. In 2003, she participated at Mission Jeunes artistes (Forum de l’image) in Toulouse (France), a springboard for young photographers. In 2004, she received subsidies from the Regional Management of the Cultural in Nord-Pas-De-Calais France (DRAC).
